The atmosphere of Mars may be tenuous when compared to that of Earth, but it can be surprisingly dynamic and produce phenomena of great magnitude and violence like the dust storm that is currently ravaging the planet.
The small Opportunity rover, which relies exclusively on its solar panels to charge the batteries, has been caught in the storm and has since been silent.
But the storm of sand and dust is so great that it has already skirted the planet and has also involved the largest and most robust Curiosity that is in the antipodes. This rover is better equipped and has a radioisotope power system to generate electricity, but the accumulation of dust and sand in its instruments is worrying NASA scientists.
This storm is also a warning to all who dream with a human presence on Mars. Future expeditions will have to be very well prepared and protected. A atmosfera de Marte pode ser ténue, quando comparada com a da Terra, mas consegue ser surpreendentemente dinâmica e produzir fenómenos de grande amplitude e violência como a tempestade de poeira que está neste momento a assolar o planeta.
O pequeno rover Opportunity, que depende exclusivamente dos seus painéis solares para carregar as baterias, foi apanhado pela tempestade e desde então tem estado silencioso.
Mas o temporal de areia e poeira é tão grande que já contornou o planeta e envolveu também o maior e mais robusto Curiosity que está nos antípodas . Este rover está melhor equipado e possui um sistema de alimentação de radioisótopos para gerar electricidade, mas a acumulação de poeiras e areia nos seus instrumentos está a preocupar os cientistas da NASA.
Esta tempestade é também um aviso a todos os que sonham com uma presença humana em Marte. As futuras expedições vão ter que estar muito bem preparadas para de defenderem. As máquinas vão ter de operar em condições extremas, ainda piores do que serão habitualmente, os fatos de exterior e os habitats vão ter que ser capazes de isolar os expedicionários de poeiras finíssimas e potencialmente letais. A produção de energia das futuras colónias não pode estar sujeita aos maus humores atmosféricos e vai ter de funcionar sem falhas, as comunicações locais e com naves orbitais e com a Terra tem que ser eficiente e redundante.
De outra forma, poderá haver uma ou duas expedições, que se correrem mal serão de certeza as últimas...
