The exoplanet Beta Pictoris b, which was discovered in 2008 by the VLT, orbits the star β Pictoris at a distance of 1.3 billion kilometers and was photographed by the same VLT using the SPHERE instrument, despite the proximity to the stellar halo that makes the  viewing even more difficult..

O exoplaneta Beta Pictoris b, que foi descoberto em 2008 pelo VLT, orbita a estrela β Pictoris a uma distância de 1,3 biliões de quilómetros e foi fotografado pelo mesmo VLT usando o instrumento SPHERE, apesar da proximidade ao halo estelar que dificulta ainda mais a sua visualização.

ESA, BepiColombo, made the first selfies / fez as primeiras selfies

BepiColombo began its long seven-year trip to Mercury on October 20.
A few hours after the launch did some selfies you can see below, along with a scheme of the location of the cameras.

A BepiColombo iniciou a sua longa viagem de sete anos para Mercúrio em 20 de Outubro.
Poucas horas depois do lançamento fez algumas selfies que pode ver em baixo, juntamente com um esquema da localização das câmaras.

Soyuz MC-10, horror and relief / horror e alívio.

The incident with the russian Soyuz rocket is the proof that the current vehicles fueled by flammable combustibles are and will continue to be dangerous until an alternative is discovered for the access to the space, but it is also a demonstration that the escape systems for crewed capsules have evolved and work fine.

Fortunately there were no casualties, but it is time for all space agencies and companies to realize that the conquest of space will suffer many setbacks and destroy many lives.

It is also time for NASA to try to reconcile the security obsession with the urgency of homologation of the SpaceX and Boeing crewed capsules, if it not want to have to look for an alternative to Soyuz in China.

O incidente com o foguetão russo Soyuz é a prova de que os actuais veículos alimentados por combustíveis inflamáveis são e vão continuar a ser perigosos, até que se descubra uma alternativa para o acesso ao espaço, mas é também uma demonstração de que os sistemas de escape para as cápsulas tripuladas evoluíram e funcionam bem.

Felizmente não houve vítimas, mas é tempo de todas as agências e empresas espaciais perceberem que a conquista do espaço vai sofrer muitos revezes e ceifar muitas vidas.

E também tempo de a NASA tentar conciliar a obsessão da segurança com a urgência da homologação das cápsulas da SpaceX e da Boeing, se não quiser ter de procurar na China uma alternativa  à Soyuz....

Hubble in trouble / Hubble em apuros.

On Friday, the Hubble Space Telescope went into safe mode due to a failed gyro – used to keep the telescope precisely pointed for long periods. Mission experts are taking steps to return Hubble to great science. More updates will follow.
