O Giant Magellan Telescope vai ser um dos maiores telescópios do mundo e vai, seguramente, revolucionar a astronomia.
A sua base é um consórcio internacional de universidades e instituições científicas de topo.
O espelho será constituído por sete segmentos, seis exteriores com 8,4 metros e um central e terá no final uma área de 368 metros quadrados e uma resolução dez vezes superior à do telescópio espacial Hubble.
Segundo o site oficial, a luz reflectida pelos espelhos principais, será reflectida de novo nos sete espelhos secundários e por fim no espelho central, sendo então enviada para as câmeras CCD.
Os espelhos secundários serão flexíveis e por baixo de cada um deles haverá centenas de actuadores para contrariar o efeito tremeluzente que a atmosfera provoca nos raios de luz.
É um gigantesco investimento na astronomia e o prenúncio de grandes e fantásticas descobertas.
