Os estudos seguintes, baseados nestas descobertas do JPL chegaram à conclusão de que por debaixo da crusta rija de Ceres, poderá haver outra camada mais maleável e até liquida em alguns sítios e que essa característica pode ter levado ao longo do tempo a uma suavização do relevo do planeta anão, que dantes seria mais acentuado.
Além disso Ceres tem muitas anomalias gravíticas, ligadas às estruturas geológicas mais conhecidas, como a maior montanha Ahuna Mons e a famosa cratera Occator, conhecida pelas suas exóticas manchas brilhantes e que os cientistas supõem ter uma origem criovulcanica.
