A Humanidade no Universo / Humanity in the Universe

Qual é o lugar de biliões de seres humanos no Universo?
Que importância têm os nossos problemas ou sonhos e projetos num contexto gigantesco, incomensurável e esmagador como o cosmos?
Para onde vamos, os de hoje, os nossos descendentes ( e já agora os biliões de criaturas que nos antecederam e já partiram, embalados, consolados pela promessa de vida eterna das religiões... ) à medida que compreendemos a nossa insignificante condição?
A evolução tecnológica acontece a par da evolução das mentalidades, isto é, o ser humano vai evoluindo e vai aceitando uma nova visão da realidade e cada descoberta feita é assimilada e vai preparando o homem para as que se seguem.
Mas estaremos nós, humanos, sobretudo os que se limitam a viver as suas vidas como tal, envoltos numa realidade que se limita ao planeta, sufocados por religiões, política, atavismos rácicos ou nacionalistas, preparados para a dura realidade que é a nossa insignificância em termos de universo?
Que lugar resta à humanidade, perante os esmagadores biliões da nos luz que nos separam de um hipotético Big Bang, onde é que nos abrigamos e protegemos perante ameaças tão assustadoras como os buracos negros, ou brancos, teorias várias, da Relatividade ou Quântica, unificadoras como a das cordas, ou ainda mais perturbadoras, como muitas outras?
O fascínio do desconhecido que une tantos seres humanos, como os que leem estas linhas, não nos pode fazer esquecer que fazemos parte de um todo, a humanidade, e que a maior parte os seres que a compõem não está preparada para revelações tão prosaicas como a descoberta de vida inteligente além da nossa, quanto mais dos profundos segredos que nos aguardam, à espera de ser desvendados, no futuro.

What is the place of billions of human beings in the universe? 
How important are our problems or dreams and projects in a gigantic, immeasurable and overwhelming context like the cosmos?
Where do we go, our contemporaries, our descendants (and now the billions of creatures that have gone before us, wrapped up, comforted by the promise of eternal life of religions ...) as we understand our insignificant condition?
Technological evolution happens alongside the evolution of mentalities, that is, the human being is evolving and accepting a new vision of reality and every discovery made is assimilated and prepares the man for those that follow. But would the humans, especially those who are limited to living their lives as such, wrapped in a reality that is limited to the planet, suffocated by religions, politics, racic and nationalist atavisms, prepared for the hard reality that is our insignificance in terms of universe?
What place does mankind have, in view of the crushing billions of light years that separate us from a hypothetical Big Bang, where do we shelter and protect ourselves from threats as frightening as black or white holes, relativity, quantum, or even unifying theories like the strings.
The fascination of the unknown that unites so many human beings, as those who read these lines can not make us forget that we are part of a whole, humanity, and that most of the beings that compose it are not prepared for revelations as prosaic as the discovery of intelligent life beyond ours, how much more the deep secrets that expect us, waiting to be unraveled in the future.
