The Thirty Meter Telescope, which is expected to be one of the largest in the world, alongside wth the ESO ELT, is a project of a consortium made up of american, japanese, chinese, indian and canadian universities and scientific institutes.
In 2009 TMT scientists chose the extinct Mauna Kea volcano at 4,205 meters high on the great island of Hawaii to build the giant telescope, and there began the problems, which, almost 10 years later are still unresolved.
Protests from the island's native communities for whom the mountain is a sacred site and environmentalists have gone to court and despite a favorable ruling from the State Board of Land and Natural Resources the situation remains in standby.
Meanwhile the TMT consortium began looking for alternatives and opted for the possibility of construction in La Palma in the Spanish archipelago of the Canaries. However, at this time there is still no decision taken, but the telescope should only be built in the Atlantic islands if it is impossible to build in Hawaii.

O Thirty Meter Telescope, que deverá ser um dos maiores do mundo, a par com o ELT do ESO, é um projecto de um consórcio constituído por universidades e institutos científicos americanos, japoneses, chineses, indianos e canadianos.
Em 2009 os cientistas do TMT escolheram o vulcão extinto Mauna Kea com 4,205 metros de altura na grande ilha do Hawaii, para construírem o gigantesco telescópio e aí começaram os problemas, que quase 10 anos depois ainda não estão resolvidos.
Os protestos das comunidades nativas da ilha, para quem a montanha é um local sagrado e dos ecologistas passaram para os tribunais e apesar de uma decisão favorável do State Board of Land and Natural Resources a situação continua num impasse.
Entretanto o consórcio do TMT começou a procurar alternativas e optou pela possibilidade de construção em La Palma no arquipélago espanhol das Canárias. No entanto, neste momento ainda não há uma decisão tomada mas o telescópio só deverá ser construído nas ilhas atlânticas se for de todo impossível a sua construção no Hawaii.
