ESA, Mars Express, possible underground lake detected on Mars / possível lago subterrâneo detectado em Marte

ESA scientists, after years of efforts using Mars Express's Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS), have detected the presence of a water sheet beneath the ice cap of the South Pole of Mars.
The radar detected the possible lake, 1500 meters underneath multiple layers of ice and dust.

Os cientistas da ESA, depois de anos de esforços usando o Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) da sonda Mars Express, detectaram a presença de um lençol aquático debaixo da calota de gelo do Polo Sul de Marte.
O radar detectou o possível lago, 1500 metros debaixo de múltiplas camadas de gelo e poeiras.

To the left, in gray, the studied area, in the center the strongest radar signs in blue, and to the right the profile of the ice cap and the lake.
À esquerda, em cinza, a zona estudada, no centro a azul os sinais de radar mais fortes, e à direita o perfil da calota de gelo e do lago.

The bright layer on top is the ice cap, followed by intermediate layers and almost to the center with about 20 kilometers of extension the brighter layer will be the eventual lake.
A camada brilhante em cima é a calota de gelo, seguem-se camadas intermédias e quase ao centro com cerca de 20 quilómetros de extensão a camada mais brilhante será o eventual lago.
