The HiRISE super camera, an instrument of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, has been busy collecting fabulous images of Mars. With the cleaner martian atmosphere, with the effects of the last dust storm fading, the results are ... astounding.

A super câmara HiRISE, High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, que equipa a Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, tem estado ocupada a recolher imagens fabulosas de Marte. Com a atmosfera marciana mais limpa, com os efeitos da última tempestade a esbaterem-se, os resultados são...espantosos.

In this infrared image, dark blue and purple represent the coarse basalt sands, formed from the erosion of the lava that was expelled millions of years ago.
Nesta imagem em infravermelhos, o azul escuro e a púrpura representam as areias grossas de basalto, formadas a partir da  erosão da lava expelida há milhões de anos.
