ELT, Extremely Large Telescope, os primeiros seis segmentos do espelho principal / the first six segments of the main mirror.

Nas montanhas do Chile, no Cerro Armazones, está a ser construído o maior telescópio do mundo, o ELT, Extremely Large Telescope que vai ampliar, a partir de 2024 a visão que a humanidade tem do universo.

Na Alemanha, em Mainz, a empresa SCHOTT começou a fundir os primeiros 6 dos 798 segmentos que constituirão o espelho principal de 39 metros. No total, serão construídos 900 hexágonos com 1,4 metros de largura e 5 centímetros de espessura, dos quais 133 serão de reserva.

A SCHOTT vai fundir em média um segmento por dia. O acabamento, formato e polimento serão feitos pela empresa francesa Safran Reosc.

In Germany, in Mainz, the company SCHOTT began to merge the first 6 of the 798 segments that will make up the 39-meter main mirror. In total, 900 hexagons measuring 1.4 meters wide and 5 centimeters thick will be built, of which 133 will be in reserve.

SCHOTT will merge on average one segment per day. The finishing, forming and polishing will be done by the French company Safran Reosc.

Falcon Heavy, testes estáticos de motores em breve / static engine testing soon

Se tudo correr bem, nomeadamente os testes de abastecimento de combustível, assistiremos brevemente aos testes estáticos dos 27 motores em simultâneo, a fase mais crítica antes do lançamento.
Pela fotografia que pode ver em baixo, publicada pelo site Teslarati, dentro de poucos dias saberemos se a SpaceX vai avançar com o voo inaugural do tão esperado Falcon Heavy.

If all goes well, namely the refueling tests, we will see shortly the static tests of the 27 engines simultaneously, the most critical phase before launch.
By the photograph you can see below, published by Teslarati website, in a few days we will know if SpaceX will advance with the inaugural flight of the long-awaited Falcon Heavy.

Dream Chaser, o menino da Sierra Nevada / the little boy from the Sierra Nevada.

Parece um shuttle e é de facto. Mas muito mais pequeno do que o Space Shuttle e com grandes aspirações.
O Dream Chaser passou mais um teste importante, em Novembro do ano passado e caminha a passos largos para a certificação como transporte de pessoas e carga para o espaço, nomeadamente a EEI e deverá estar operacional no princípio da próxima década.
Mais um exemplo da extraordinária vitalidade do sector privado espacial norte americano.

Eris, um planeta anão, muito para lá de Plutão / a dwarf planet, far beyond Pluto

Éris é um planeta anão, rochoso e coberto de gelo e que fica três vezes mais longe do que Plutão. Demora 557 anos a orbitar o Sol e a sua órbita elíptica leva-o para lá do Cinturão de Kuiper.
É mais pequeno do que Plutão, tem uma lua, Disnomia, e foi descoberto em 2003 pelo Observatório de Palomar.

Eris is a dwarf planet, rocky and covered with ice and that is three times as far away as Pluto. It takes 557 years to orbit the Sun and its elliptical orbit takes it beyond the Kuiper Belt.
It is smaller than Pluto, has a moon, Dysnomia, and was discovered in 2003 by the Palomar Observatory.
