Ross 128 b, um novo e excitante planeta / a new and exciting planet.

Astrónomos do La Silla Observatory, um telescópio do ESO no Chile, usando o sistema (HARPS)  High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, descobriram um novo planeta a uma distância de 11 anos luz, em órbita da estrela Ross 128, que tem características semelhantes às do nosso.
A Ross 128 é uma anã vermelha, estável, muito mais fria e menos luminosa do que a Terra, e por isso, embora o planeta esteja muito mais próximo da sua estrela do que a Terra está do Sol, recebe luz e calor suficientes para ter uma temperatura que, segundo as previsões dos cientistas, oscila entre -60 e 20 ºC, o que permitirá ter água em estado liquido e condições para a existência de vida.
Este planeta é o segundo com estas características, mais perto do nosso, depois do famoso Proxima b, que orbita Proxima Centauri.
Ross 128 e Proxima b vão ser um dos alvos preferenciais do ELT, Extremely Large Telescope do ESO  e dos novos telescópios espaciais e terrestres actualmente em construção.
Como curiosidade, a estrela Ross 128, que está a deslocar-se na nossa direcção, será dentro de 79000 anos a mais próxima da Terra e o planeta Próxima b o exoplaneta mais próximo de nós.

Astronomers at La Silla Observatory, an ESO telescope in Chile, using the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) system, discovered a new planet at a distance of 11 light years, orbiting the star Ross 128, which has characteristics similar to those of Earth..
The Ross 128 is a red dwarf, stable, much colder and less luminous than the Earth, and therefore, although the planet is much closer to its star than the Earth is from the Sun, it receives sufficient light and heat to have a temperature that, according to the predictions of the scientists, fluctuates between -60 and 20 ºC, which will allow to have water in liquid state and conditions for the existence of life.
This planet is the second with these characteristics, closer to ours, after the famous Proxima b, that orbits Proxima Centauri.
Ross 128 and Proxima b will be one of the preferred targets of ESO's ELT, Extremely Large Telescope and other new space and ground-based telescopes currently under construction.
As a curiosity, Ross 128, which is moving in our direction, will be within 79000 years the star closest to Earth and the planet Proxima b the exoplanet closest to us.
